“Nothing makes me happier than flying! I am thrilled to share my journey and love for hot air ballooning with you.”

- Jeremy Durazo

I took my first hot air balloon flight when I was 18 years old, and it quietly reshaped the course of my life. What began as curiosity turned almost immediately into something deeper. From the moment the balloon lifted off the ground, I felt a sense of clarity and calm that I had never experienced before. The noise of the world faded, replaced by wind, light, and the slow rhythm of flight. I knew then that this was not just an activity I enjoyed. It was something I wanted to build my life around.

That early flight opened the door to a lifelong relationship with the sky. Over the years, flying became woven into my daily identity. Today, I spend nearly every flyable day in the air, whether that means piloting a hot air balloon, launching a paraglider, or sometimes doing both in the same day. Each aircraft offers a different experience, but all of them rely on the same philosophy of working with the atmosphere rather than fighting it. As a hot air balloon pilot, that relationship with the wind is everything.

I have always been drawn to adventure and the outdoors. Long before flying, I explored the world through rock climbing, hiking, and any pursuit that demanded focus, patience, and respect for nature. Those experiences shaped how I approach flight. Ballooning rewards the same mindset. You observe first, listen closely, and make decisions with intention. It is a discipline rooted in awareness as much as skill.

Hot air ballooning, in particular, holds something uniquely meaningful for me. It is one of the most honest forms of aviation. There is no engine pushing you forward and no direct steering. Instead, you navigate by altitude, temperature, and an understanding of shifting wind layers. Flying a balloon requires trust in preparation and trust in nature. Every hot air balloon ride pilot learns that no two flights are ever the same, and that is exactly what keeps it endlessly fascinating.

Ballooning also creates space to slow down. Floating quietly above the landscape offers a perspective that is impossible to find on the ground. Rivers, farmland, neighborhoods, and forests reveal patterns and connections that often go unnoticed. In the Pacific Northwest, flying near Mt. Rainier is especially powerful. The mountain has a presence that commands attention, and seeing it from a balloon at sunrise is something that never loses its impact. It is one of the reasons hot air balloon tours in the Seattle area feel so special.

Paragliding complements ballooning in a different way. It is more intimate and more physical, demanding constant awareness of air movement and terrain. Where ballooning teaches patience and long range thinking, paragliding sharpens instinct and precision. Together, they shape how I read the sky and respond to changing conditions, whether I am guiding a balloon or launching a wing.

This upcoming season marks an exciting new chapter. It will be my first season flying with Seattle Ballooning, and I could not be more excited to join the team in the air over Seattle. I officially joined Seattle Ballooning as a pilot at the Prosser Balloon Festival this past year, and the experience left a lasting impression. From the first launch to the final pack up, the professionalism, skill, and camaraderie of the team stood out immediately.

Flying alongside pilots who value safety, precision, and genuine connection with passengers made it clear that this was a group I wanted to grow with. That first festival felt less like an introduction and more like a welcome. It set the tone for what I am most looking forward to this season: working as part of a tight knit team while sharing the magic of ballooning with guests experiencing their first hot air balloon ride.

As I prepare for my first full season flying hot air balloon tours in Seattle, I am especially excited to introduce passengers to the landscapes that make this region so unique. From quiet farmland at sunrise to clear mornings with Mt. Rainier towering in the distance, each flight offers something different. My goal on every flight is to create a calm, memorable experience that reflects the beauty and freedom of ballooning.

For me, flying is never just about the view. It is about presence and perspective. A hot air balloon ride invites you to slow down, let go of urgency, and experience the world at a different pace. Letting the wind choose the path is not about giving up control. It is about understanding when to guide, when to adapt, and when to simply appreciate the rare privilege of seeing the world from the sky.
